The symbolism of the Conch Shell

The conch shell is symbolizing power. Jack is worthy of leading them and must be reliable for their survival and luck. It is a symbol of hope as well because as long as there is order, there is a chance of survival. the counch shell is very rare. This shell holds a dark and mysterious power over the group who are lost and standed on the island without adults. They have no clues or means of escape.  I don't think this will work for the boys. I think it will take the boys to far off the island andd something bad will happen to one of them, if not all of them.         - Kierstin Swinderman

Chapter 2 shows many different feelings. Piggy is nervous throughout the whole chapter. He feels neglected, when Ralph chooses Jack Simon for the scouting. On the other hand, Ralph feels overwhelmed. Jack adds pressure to his duty. The children run around to scope things out on the island. Piggy gets a angry with Jack, when Jack over powers Jim. However, he is honored that his glasses we're used for the fire. At end, Piggy and the younger children believe the boy with the Mark on his head was eaten by a snakey beast.        - Megan King

Chapter one starts the book with the introduction of all the boys. This also shows the many different strengths of the group such as Jack and his dominant trait. My reaction to this chapter is how calm the whole group is. I figured from how dependent children are at this age this would cause them to be terrified and scrambled.            - George Seketa
