Chapter 9, Summary and Response
In chapter 9, most of Ralph's tribe leaves for Jack's tribe. They sneak away, while gathering wood for the fire. All the boys noticed that Simon was missing. The assumed he was bathing. Piggy and Ralph had a water fight, where Piggy chickened out. He didn't want to ruin his specs. Ralph's tribe traveled to the land of Jack's tribe for a feast. They tried to have a meeting it ended in the dancing and killing of Simon. Ralph and Jack got in a fight over whose fault it was that the fire went out.
I think that if the boys would have had more common sense, Simon wouldn't have been killed. Their minds were messed up, and they were agitated with each other. They so would have thought through things more. I feel that Jack is overbearing, and rude. He has control issues, and should seek help if they ever make it back. - Megan King
Ending Prediction
I predict that in the end of the book they will be rescued. On the way to being rescued, that many of the boys will die. With Simon already dead, you never know how things will turn out. I think Jack will be killed, by all the boys that are sick of his attitude. Ralph will become leader again and Piggy will be his sidekick.
I think the younger boys are starting to realize that they can't play all the time anymore. With all of the boys scared of Jack, when they have Ralph back leading them, they will behave perfectly. They will enjoy not being beaten and tied up by Jack and his tribe. This is my prediction to the end of The Lord of The Flies. - Megan King

Summary chapter 8
All the boys were so scared of the beast. They did not want to leave the fire because they felt as if the creature was waiting for them. They had to make new rules and keep the fire going so there would be smoke. Also so they could have a nice fire to sit beside when they were cold. They all froze and say there in silence for a while. Then Simon picked up te conch cell and blew in it.

One interesting fact from this website is that boars aren't native to North America. Another is that male boars have long tusks that stick out of their mouths. Lastly, boars enjoy living near water sources. - Megan King

chapter 4 summary
In chapter 4 of Lord of the flies most of the stranded children(boys) neglected their responsibilties. One of which being the most important, keeping the fire going at all hours of the day. Instead the group assigned this job were off hunting. In the meen time a ship is spotted on the horizon but they have no fire to signal the passing ship. All the children learn a lesson that day.
Chapter 4 Summary and Response
In chapter four, Jack paints his face before he goes hunting. He believes this is a sign htat he should be incharge. Ralph notices Jack's change in behaviorand becomes angry as well as jealous. The group notices a ship, but hten they realize that the fire went out and it was Jack's fault. Jack tries to cover it up in a way by saying he killed a pig. The group was happy they had meat, but yet Ralph was angry about the fire.
I think Jack should've kept a better watch on the fire or asked somebody else to help. If the fire would've still been smoking, the ship would've seen them and could've rescued them. Being stuck on the island would be torturous. I can understand why there would be fighting. I also understand why Ralph feels like everything is all on him. He has to carry a lot of weight on his shoulders. He leared this from the building of the shelters.

Symbolism
Symbolism- the practice of representing by symbols, or of investing things with a symbolic meaning or character
Symbolism applies to the book because, the conch shell is a symbol to the group. The conch shell represents a feeling of family and order. They need the shell to keep order, call meetings, and provide the speaker with the right to talk. Chapter 2-3 shows this well.

The symbolism of the Conch Shell
The conch shell is symbolizing power. Jack is worthy of leading them and must be reliable for their survival and luck. It is a symbol of hope as well because as long as there is order, there is a chance of survival. the counch shell is very rare. This shell holds a dark and mysterious power over the group who are lost and standed on the island without adults. They have no clues or means of escape. I don't think this will work for the boys. I think it will take the boys to far off the island andd something bad will happen to one of them, if not all of them. - Kierstin Swinderman

Chapter 2 shows many different feelings. Piggy is nervous throughout the whole chapter. He feels neglected, when Ralph chooses Jack Simon for the scouting. On the other hand, Ralph feels overwhelmed. Jack adds pressure to his duty. The children run around to scope things out on the island. Piggy gets a angry with Jack, when Jack over powers Jim. However, he is honored that his glasses we're used for the fire. At end, Piggy and the younger children believe the boy with the Mark on his head was eaten by a snakey beast. - Megan King
Chapter one starts the book with the introduction of all the boys. This also shows the many different strengths of the group such as Jack and his dominant trait. My reaction to this chapter is how calm the whole group is. I figured from how dependent children are at this age this would cause them to be terrified and scrambled. - George Seketa
